Stainless steel and aluminum window screens overlap in several mesh sizes, but their grades, BWG ranges, roll widths, finishes, and applications differ. This comparison helps you select a screen by opening dimensions, material requirement, appearance, and order format. Check the mesh, wire diameter, width, length, and finish together before requesting a quotation.
Stainless Steel Window Screen
Aluminum Window Screen
Stainless steel window screen and aluminum window screen use square mesh to keep insects out while allowing air and light through. The purchasing decision turns on material, mesh range, wire diameter, roll dimensions, finish, and intended setting. We supply both types, so you can match the specification to your openings before requesting a quotation.
Material and mesh construction
Stainless steel window screen is woven from stainless steel wire and comes in grades 304, 316, and 316L. Its mesh choices are 14 × 14, 16 × 16, 18 × 14, 18 × 18, and 20 × 20. The product fits window, door, and porch applications where a strong metal screen is required.
Aluminum window screen uses aluminum wire or aluminum-magnesium alloy wire in a plain weave. Its mesh choices are 18 × 18, 18 × 16, 18 × 14, 16 × 16, 16 × 14, and 14 × 14. The square opening suits windows, doors, porches, and patios in homes, hotels, and buildings.
The two products overlap at 14 × 14, 16 × 16, 18 × 14, and 18 × 18 mesh. Stainless steel also has a 20 × 20 option, while aluminum also has 18 × 16 and 16 × 14. If your frame or insect-control requirement uses a particular mesh count, put that count at the top of the inquiry.
Wire diameter and roll dimensions
The wire diameter ranges are different. Stainless steel runs from BWG 30 to BWG 38, while aluminum runs from BWG 31 to BWG 34. Ask us to quote the selected BWG with the mesh count, because these are separate parts of the screen specification.
The available widths also differ. Stainless steel comes in 2, 3, 4, and 5 feet. Aluminum comes in 18, 24, 30, 36, 48, 60, and 72 inches. In feet, those aluminum widths are 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6 feet. Aluminum therefore covers a 1.5-foot and a 6-foot option, while stainless steel covers 2 to 5 feet.
Both products list 30-foot, 50-foot, and 100-foot lengths, with additional length options. Picture the installation as a roll-cutting task: measure each opening, allow for the frame overlap required by your assembly, and group the cuts before selecting the roll length.
Finish and appearance
Stainless steel window screen comes in bright and black. Aluminum comes in black, silver, and charcoal, and aluminum-magnesium alloy screen can receive epoxy coating in black, green, silver gray, yellow, and blue. These choices let you coordinate the screen with the frame and the exterior appearance.
Black stainless steel and black or charcoal aluminum may point to a similar visual treatment, but the base materials and wire ranges remain different. Include the finish with the material, mesh, BWG, width, and length so the quotation describes one complete screen specification.
Environment and use
Stainless steel screen resists rust and corrosion and suits windows, doors, and porches in different types of environments. Aluminum screen resists rust, heat, acid, alkaline conditions, and corrosion. Its listed uses include windows, doors, porches, and patios in humid, corrosive, and dusty environments, as well as family, hotel, and building projects.
Select stainless steel when the order calls for grade 304, 316, or 316L, a 20 × 20 mesh, or a 2-to-5-foot width. Select aluminum when the project needs aluminum-magnesium alloy wire, a 1.5-foot or 6-foot width, or epoxy-coated color choices. Measure the finished opening and decide the required appearance before asking us to prepare the order.
Questions to settle before ordering
What is the natural color of aluminum window screen?
The natural color is silver white. We can also supply aluminum screen in black, silver, and charcoal, with epoxy coating options that include green, silver gray, yellow, and blue. If the frame is intended to match a silver exterior, specify natural silver white in the inquiry instead of selecting a coated finish by color name alone.
Does a black stainless steel finish change the view through the screen?
Black stainless steel is used to reduce glare and improve visibility. The screen still keeps the listed square mesh open for airflow and insect protection. For a view-facing window or porch, state that you want the black finish and include the mesh count, BWG, width, and length so we can keep the visual requirement tied to the complete specification.
Is aluminum-magnesium alloy screen the same product as magnesium wire screen?
Yes. The aluminum product uses aluminum wire or aluminum-magnesium alloy wire, and the same product is also called aluminum-magnesium alloy window screen or magnesium wire screen. Use the material name together with the mesh and BWG in your inquiry. That combination distinguishes the screen from stainless steel wire screen when both materials are being considered.
Match the roll to the opening
Stainless steel fits orders centered on grades 304, 316, or 316L and widths from 2 to 5 feet. Aluminum fits projects needing a 1.5-foot or 6-foot listed width, aluminum-magnesium alloy wire, or epoxy-coated colors. See our stainless steel window screens, then send the material, grade where applicable, mesh count, BWG, color, width, length, opening sizes, and quantity for a quotation.
